Why Swapping Beliefs Doesn’t Grant Freedom:
Dogmatism and the Psychology of Fanaticism

Fear of Uncertainty and the Need for Cognitive Closure (NFC)

Imagine a prisoner who has spent his entire life in a cramped, dark cell. One day, he finds a way to pick the lock and escapes… only to find himself in the neighboring cell, which is exactly the same, just painted a different color. He feels a surge of euphoria from his "escape" and believes he has found freedom. In reality, he has simply traded one prison for another.

This is exactly what our "liberation" from dogmas often looks like. An ex-atheist becomes a religious fanatic. A former workaholic becomes an obsessed spiritual seeker. A hardcore fitness enthusiast becomes a rigid devotee of esotericism.

We feel like we’ve staged a revolution and completely overhauled our views. But very often, we haven’t freed ourselves from the mechanism of dogmatic thinking itself. We’ve simply swapped one set of rigid, unyielding rules for another. In this Step, we will learn to distinguish true mental freedom from a mere "change of scenery" in your internal prison.

Key Topics of the Lesson:

  • The Psychology of Fanaticism:
Understanding why the brain searches for "pre-packaged solutions" and simple, binary answers.
  • The Need for Closure (NFC):
The biological mechanism behind our natural intolerance for uncertainty and ambiguity.
  • Practical Application:
The "Dogmatism Audit"—a protocol for testing your new beliefs to ensure they remain flexible and open to reality.

Liberation from Dogmas vs. Swapping Dogmas:
What’s the Difference?

Swapping dogmas is what happens when you abandon one set of ready-made answers ("Fortress A") and unthinkingly adopt another ("Fortress B"). You might change the flag on your tower, but your brain remains in "defense mode." You aren't searching for truth; you are searching for a new set of walls to hide behind.

Liberation from dogmas is when you walk out of the fortress entirely. You reject the very idea of "final, absolute answers." You accept the inherent complexity and uncertainty of the world and finally begin to think for yourself.

The key distinction lies in the process, not the final result.

  • A person who is merely swapping dogmas is searching for a new faith. Their primary question is: "What should I believe in now?"
  • A person who is liberating themselves is searching for clarity. Their primary question is: "On what specific facts and logic is this claim based?"

In social psychology, this drive is known as the Need for Closure (NFC).

It is the human urge to find a definitive answer to a question—any answer at all—simply to escape the discomfort of ambiguity. A high level of NFC often pushes individuals toward rigid ideological structures, such as cults, radical political parties, or extreme "miracle" diets.

The Biological Mechanism:

  • Uncertainty triggers a systemic stress response (Cortisol).
  • Adopting a ready-made dogma ("The world works exactly like THIS!") instantly neutralizes that anxiety and provides a rewarding hit of Dopamine.

From an engineering perspective, swapping one dogma for another is not a system upgrade—it is simply switching to a different brand of psychological sedative.

Expert Insight:

“Freedom brings to the individual independence and rationality, but at the same time it makes him isolated and, thereby, anxious and powerless. This fear makes us seek new chains to replace the old ones.”

Erich Fromm, social psychologist, philosopher, and author of Escape from Freedom.

Signs That You Have Simply "Swapped Cells"

1. A New "Faith":

You moved from one ideology to another—perhaps from Atheism to Buddhism, or from a corporate career to "spiritual seeking." These systems are not inherently bad, but if you have accepted them in their entirety as a package deal without questioning the details, it is a red flag.

2. A New "Enemy":

Before, you judged one group of people; now, you judge another. The presence of a clearly defined "enemy" is a surefire sign of dogmatic, black-and-white thinking.

3. Defense Over Discovery:

You react to criticism of your new views with the same hostility as you did with your old ones. You have simply moved back into "Fortress Defense" mode.

Authentic Freedom: Rejecting the "Package Deal"

A truly free thinker does not belong to any single "camp."

  • They might agree with some ideas from one philosophy while respecting others from a completely different school of thought.
  • They might adopt useful practices from a religion without blindly accepting its entire metaphysics.
  • They recognize the immense power of science while simultaneously understanding its limitations.

They don't order the "full set menu" at any mental restaurant. Instead, they order a la carte, selecting only the specific "dishes" they have personally tested for truth and practical value.

Practical Assignment:
The Dogmatism Audit

The Goal of this Practice:

To analyze one of your newly acquired beliefs (learned during your personal growth journey) for hidden signs of dogmatism.

1. Select Your Belief

Choose a significant conviction that has entered your worldview over the last few years. (Examples: "I must live mindfully," "The universe is abundant," or "I should always follow my intuition").

2. Perform a "Cross-Examination"

Ask yourself several honest questions:

  • "Did I adopt this belief because I verified it through personal experience in various situations, or simply because a respected author or 'guru' presented it beautifully?"
  • "Am I truly ready to listen to well-reasoned criticism of this belief? Or does the mere thought of it trigger instant irritation?"
  • "Do I view people who don't share this belief as 'less developed' or 'still asleep'?" (This is a clear indicator that a new "enemy" has been created).

3. Draw Your Conclusion

If you notice signs of dogmatism, do not judge yourself. This is a natural systemic reaction. Simply tell yourself: "Aha, it looks like I’ve started building a new fortress. It’s time to step outside into the fresh air."

A Question for Reflection

Looking back at your journey, have there been moments where you enthusiastically "swapped one faith for another"? How did you feel at that time, and what was the ultimate outcome?

⚙︎ Technical Diagnostics:
Cognitive Closure and Monolithic Logic Architecture

From a systems perspective, ambiguity and uncertainty represent a High-Entropy State.

The human operating system has a low tolerance for unverified data, often triggering an Uncertainty Buffer Overflow—a state of high cortisol and systemic stress.

To neutralize this, the brain executes a Need for Closure (NFC) Routine, forcing an immediate "Logic Lock" onto any available dogma.

This is not a data verification process; it is a Power Management routine designed to terminate expensive analytical processing at the cost of accuracy.

🛡 Safety Protocol:
The "Black Sheep" Effect

Be prepared: true freedom of thought often leads to losing the comforting sense of belonging to the crowd.

When you stop sharing the dogmas of a group ("We are the Light, they are the Darkness"), the group may reject you. A free thinker often has to walk alone, which is the price of absolute mental clarity.

Do not be alarmed if you feel like an outsider at first. In time, you will find genuine fellow travelers who value truth over ideological loyalty.
