Alex Guru:
Author of The Consciousness Workshop

Alex Guru, author of The Consciousness Workshop (photo processed as an engraving)

Hello. Alex Guru is a pen name.

I deliberately don’t publish my real name or personal details. I don’t want fans or followers, and I don’t want this teaching to rest on my personality. What matters is not who I am, but whether a practice works for you. So please don’t take my word for it — test it yourself.

The photo is of me. It has been processed to look like an engraving.

🛡 Who I Am and Who I Am Not

  • I have no medical or psychological qualifications. I am not a doctor, psychologist or psychotherapist.
  • Everything I teach, I have first tested on myself.
  • The course is for mentally healthy people who want to understand themselves better, handle stress more calmly and live more mindfully. It does not treat depression, anxiety or any other disorder, and it does not replace a doctor.
  • If you feel very unwell or have symptoms that frighten you, see a doctor first.

Why I Don’t Talk
About Diplomas

What I teach did not come to me from courses or lecture halls. I taught myself: I read, tried things out and kept notes, year after year.

Diplomas prove nothing here. If I talked about degrees and certificates, you might think this is only for professors. It isn’t: anyone can do these practices — a driver, a cook, a street sweeper, anyone at all. What you need is time, honesty with yourself and regular practice.

How It All Began

Three events, coming almost one after another, made me look for answers.

An antique engraving of prison bars and heavy chains: A metaphor for a crisis of personal freedom and the feeling of being trapped in a life dead-end.

1. A False Accusation

Interrogations and the threat of prison. After a month of constant stress, my hair turned grey.

A complex, dark maze as a symbol for a crisis of meaning and the total loss of life direction.

2. Losing Someone Close

My father’s best friend, a strong and cheerful man, wasted away from worry within two months of losing his job. I saw how strongly worry affects the body.

An empty vintage wallet: An illustration of a survival crisis, catastrophic financial loss, and the fear of poverty.

3. Losing My Money

In two days I lost everything. I was married with a child and had nothing left to live on.

That was when I decided:

“I don’t believe people were made to suffer. I want to understand how this works.”

The Village Healer’s Threads

As a child I had a nervous disorder. I was taken to a village healer who performed a strange ritual with threads, and I got better. As an adult I began to wonder: how did that work? Later I learned about the placebo effect and how strongly trust and expectation affect how we feel. I wanted to understand this mechanism so I could use it consciously, without rituals or mysticism.

This is not advice to visit healers. If something hurts, see a doctor first. The practices in this course are an addition to proper medical care, not a replacement for it.

My Path in Dates

  • 2006. I began looking for answers: I read everything — psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, religious texts — and tried what I read on myself. The first results came even then.
  • 2008. I set myself a goal: two years of honest daily practice, without expecting miracles. Since then I have practised every day and kept notes on what I do, what I notice, and what works and what doesn’t.
  • The years that followed. I taught people in person: friends, acquaintances and people who came on someone’s recommendation — more than 70 in total. We practised, talked and argued, and many of them got results of their own.
  • A book grew out of my notes. In it I gathered the whole teaching.
  • 2025. The book became the course on this website.

How the Book Became a Course
and Where AI Helped

The content of the lessons comes from my book. Artificial intelligence helped me turn it into a course:

  • splitting the book into courses, levels and lessons and putting them in order;
  • coming up with lesson titles and search descriptions;
  • coming up with a metaphor at the start of each lesson (which I then edited myself);
  • writing the warnings and safety guidelines.

I read and edited all of the content myself. By my estimate, 80–85% of the work on the course is mine, and each lesson is about 85% text from my book.

The English and Spanish versions were translated with the help of AI. How the lessons and articles are written is explained in detail on the How We Create Our Content page.

I’m not asking you to take my word for it. I’m inviting you to try.

My Principles

I only teach
what I have lived

Every practice has been tested on myself.

Logic,
not magic

If I can’t explain how something works, I don’t teach it.

Instructions,
not slogans

Motivation fades; skills stay.

Whose Work I Have Studied

I am familiar with the work of these researchers and draw on their ideas. The course is my own experience and my retelling of these ideas, not scientific research, and the authors themselves have no connection to it.

  • Robert Sapolsky — how chronic stress affects the body.
  • Lisa Feldman Barrett — emotions as the brain’s predictions.
  • Aaron Beck — automatic thoughts and cognitive distortions.
  • Daniel Kahneman — fast and slow thinking, errors in decisions.
  • Albert Bandura — self-efficacy and how it shapes results.
  • Edward Deci and Richard Ryan — intrinsic and imposed motivation.
  • BJ Fogg — tiny habits instead of willpower.
  • Anders Ericsson — deliberate practice.
  • Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi — the flow state.
  • Martin Seligman — learned helplessness and learned optimism.
  • Steven Hayes — looking at your own thoughts from the outside.
  • Robert Plutchik — the wheel of emotions.
  • Robert Cialdini — how we are influenced and how to notice it.
  • Eric Berne — life scripts and roles.
  • Carl Gustav Jung — the shadow and working with dreams.
  • Viktor Frankl — meaning and the freedom to choose our response.
