How to Understand Out-of-Body Experience:

Why Out-of-Body Experiences Feel Real:
Your Brain’s Peripersonal Space Map

We tend to think our sensations are strictly limited to the boundaries of our skin. You can feel the warmth of your own hand, but you can't feel the warmth of a table without touching it. The body seems like a clearly defined "container" for our consciousness.

But have you ever had a strange, fleeting feeling — as though for just a moment you sensed the space around you as clearly as you sense your own body? Or, while drifting off to sleep, noticed a sensation of "falling" or "rolling out" of your physical body?

Most of us get spooked by experiences like these, writing them off as tiredness, stress, or the brain playing tricks. We try to forget them, treating them as something abnormal. But what if they aren't tricks at all? What if they are glimpses of entirely new, undiscovered abilities in our perception — ones that awaken as our awareness grows?

Key Topics of the Lesson:

  • Out-of-Body Experience (OBE):
A glitch in sensory integration — or a hidden ability of the brain?
  • Peripersonal Space:
Neurons that sense objects at a distance.
  • Temporoparietal Junction (TPJ):
The area of the brain responsible for the feeling of "I am inside my body".
  • Practice:
The "Scanning" technique for expanding the boundaries of perception.

Why do you feel warmth or pressure between your palms without touching them?

  • This is the work of Multimodal Neurons in the parietal lobe. They create a "buffer zone" around the body (Peripersonal Space) to protect you from collisions.

These neurons are activated not only by touch, but also by an object approaching you. Your "sense of the field" is your brain's built-in safety radar at work.

Expert Insight:

"The feeling of leaving the body is not mystical. It is the result of a mismatch between visual and vestibular signals in the Temporoparietal Junction of the brain. We can induce this state in a laboratory by stimulating that area with an electrical current."

Olaf Blanke, neuroscientist, Professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne.

🔒 Unlock Your Life Force

You've learned the physiology of the process. But the body doesn't change from reading books. To restore your energy and joy, you need somatic protocols. The closed section of this lesson contains practices for connecting the mind and body.

What awaits you here:

  • Unblocking Techniques: A clear algorithm for managing your state (arousal, sleep, pleasure).
  • Libido Management: How to transform sexual energy into vitality and creativity.
  • Safety Guidelines: How to work with body memory and sensitivity without overwhelming the nervous system.

This lesson is part of the "Course 5: The Art of Pleasure" system. Reclaim your taste for life, and take control of your energy and health.

Is this your first time here?

⚙︎ Technical Diagnostics:
Peripersonal Boundary Mapping Protocols

The human nervous system extends its sensory perimeter beyond the physical skin boundary via a dedicated layer of multimodal neurons concentrated in the parietal lobe. These cells function as a distributed proximity sensor array, firing in response to visual, tactile, and auditory stimuli approaching the body envelope — even before physical contact is made. The result is a dynamic, invisible 'buffer zone' extending roughly 30–100 cm from the body surface.

This architecture is not passive. The buffer zone is continuously recalibrated based on context: it expands in threatening environments and contracts in familiar ones. When you sense 'pressure' or 'warmth' between your palms without touching, this is the cross-activation of visuo-tactile neurons (particularly in areas VIP and F4 of the premotor-parietal circuit) responding to proximity, not contact. The system is reading field gradients, not surface collisions.

🛡 Safety Note:
Sleep Paralysis

When practising deep relaxation and entering an OBE (out-of-body experience), you may encounter Sleep Paralysis.

This is a state in which your mind has woken up but your body is still asleep — paralysed and unable to move. It is often accompanied by a feeling of pressure on the chest or a sense that something is present in the room.

What to do:
Don't panic. It's completely safe. This is a protective mechanism that stops you from physically acting out your dreams. To come out of it, try wiggling your smallest toe, or move your eyes rapidly from side to side. The signal will get through and your body will wake up.

Coming Up Next:
How to wake up inside a dream and take control of your reality

The experience of an "out-of-body" state is closely connected to the world of dreams. In the next Step we'll explore the "Dream Laboratory" — and look at how to transform your dreams from a jumble of random images into a space for conscious exploration and extraordinary discoveries.
