Step 4
How to Experience Self-Transcendent Emotions:
Awe, Oneness, and Clarity

Why Self-Transcendence Feels So Real:
Parietal Lobe and Mental Noise
In the previous Step, we learned to tell apart the "volume" (intensity) and the "stickiness" (magnetism) of our joyful states. But those are just two basic dimensions. As your practice deepens, you may come across experiences of an entirely new kind.
Think of water:
- It can simply be "warm," or it can be "crystal clear" — like water from a natural spring. That is the quality of purity.
- And it can be in a "glass," or it can be in an "ocean." That is the quality of volume.
Our states of joy work the same way. Beyond strength and steadiness, they have two higher dimensions: "Clarity" (purity) and "Wholeness" (volume). These are the hallmarks of true mastery and the deepest experiences we can have. In this Step, we will learn to recognise them.
