Step 4
How to Avoid Spiritual Materialism:
Stop the Ego from Hijacking Growth

Why Spiritual Growth Stalls:
How to Drop the Master Identity Trap
You have come an incredible distance. You have learned to manage your emotions, desires, and beliefs. You have become calmer, wiser, stronger. You are a Master of your inner (spiritual) world. And that is a beautiful thing.
But right here, at the very peak, the final trap is waiting for us — the most subtle and the most dangerous one. We begin to identify with this image of the Master (with the image of the Teacher, the "Enlightened One"). We start to enjoy being "mindful", "enlightened", "advanced", "different from everyone else".
Our "I", our Ego — which we worked so hard to tame — finds itself a new, very beautiful and very "spiritual" hiding place. It begins to cling to its new status and personal positioning. And this seemingly harmless process becomes the biggest obstacle to your continued, genuine growth.
