The thalamus functions as the brain's primary sensory relay hub — a biological router that forwards incoming signals from all peripheral sensors (eyes, ears, skin, proprioceptors) to the appropriate cortical processing zones. Under normal operating conditions, this gateway runs in open-pass mode, continuously streaming environmental data into conscious awareness.

During deep meditative states — particularly the 'Vacuum' practice — the system initiates what neuroscientists call thalamic gating: a deliberate suppression of afferent signal throughput. Thalamocortical relay neurons reduce their firing rate, effectively closing the gate. The cortex stops receiving new sensory packets.
