Step 5
Why We Only Believe What We Want:
Motivated Reasoning

Defeating Confirmation Bias:
The "Confidence Swings" Technique
Imagine a circus strongman effortlessly juggling heavy weights. How did he reach such mastery? He wasn't born with it. He spent years training, starting with light weights, gradually increasing the load, and perfecting every movement until it became second nature.
In the previous Steps, we were like beginners just learning to lift the "weights" of our beliefs. We learned to notice them, analyze them, and question them.
But what if you could reach the level of a "circus athlete"? What if there was a practice that allowed you, like a juggler, to easily and playfully "toss" and "catch" your confidence, consciously switching it from one pole to another? This practice is the pinnacle of mental flexibility training. It is called "Confidence Swings."
