Step 2

How to Create New Emotional States:
Emotional Synthesis That Actually Works

How Does Emotional Synthesis Work:
Use Horizontal Transfer to Blend Feelings

In the previous Step, we learned how to strike simple "emotional chords." But the world of music isn't limited to three basic chords. There are thousands of variations — minor, major, with added notes — each with its own unique mood and "colour."

The same is true of our inner "emotional chords." When you feel Affection and Admiration at the same time, that's one "chord." But when you feel Affection and Compassion together, it's a completely different one — with a different "sound" and "aftertaste."

What's more, every "emotional chord" has its own unique qualities. Some are stable and long-lasting; others are vivid but fleeting. And some have a remarkable ability to spread through your whole being. In this Step, we'll become true "alchemists" and "tasters" of our own inner states, exploring their subtlest qualities and textures.

Key Topics of the Lesson:

  • Emotional synthesis:
How the brain creates new feelings (Conceptual Blending theory).
  • The Synergy Effect:
Why the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
  • Practice:
The "Horizontal Transfer" technique — using a strong state to amplify a weaker one.

Systems theory has a concept called Emergence — when a system develops properties that none of its individual parts possess on their own.

  • Example:
Hydrogen (flammable) + Oxygen (flammable) = Water (puts out fire).
  • In the mind:
    Affection + Respect + Attraction =
    Love.

Love is an emergent property of the "chord" — something that simply doesn't exist in any single "note" on its own.

Expert Insight:

"The whole is something other than the sum of its parts. When we analyse the individual elements, we lose the essence of the experience. Harmony must be perceived as a whole."

Kurt Koffka, Gestalt psychologist.

🔒 Move from Theory to Emotional Alchemy

You've learned the structure of emotions. But knowing the notes doesn't mean knowing how to play the music. To enter a resourceful state on demand, you need Flow technologies. The closed section of this lesson contains tools for dynamic energy management.

What awaits you here:

  • Flow Entry Algorithm: A guide to switching your brain into high-performance mode (based on S. Kotler).
  • Emotional Synthesis: How to blend basic emotions to reach higher states (Elation, Awe).
  • Burnout Prevention: How to use the Law of Reversed Effort to avoid burning out on the way to your goal.

This lesson is part of the "Course 7: The Psychology of Flow" system. Gain access to managing your energy and inspiration.

Before creating complex "alloys," you need to understand the structure of emotions (free):

⚙︎ Technical Diagnostics:
Multi-Channel Affective State Synthesis

The brain does not process emotions as isolated, discrete signals. Instead, the limbic-cortical network — primarily the amygdala, anterior insula, and orbitofrontal cortex — operates as a multi-channel mixing board, receiving simultaneous affective inputs and producing a unified output state that carries properties absent from any single input channel.

This is the neurological basis of emergence: when Affection (routed via the amygdala-reward axis) and Respect (processed in the medial prefrontal cortex) are co-activated, the resulting state recruits additional oxytocin and vasopressin pathways, generating a qualitatively new configuration. The output signal is not additive — it is combinatorially amplified, producing what systems engineers would call a non-linear gain response.

Psychologically, this maps to Fauconnier and Turner's Conceptual Blending Theory: the mind constructs a 'blended space' from multiple input representations, yielding emergent structure that exists only in the blend itself — never in the source inputs alone.

🛡 A Word of Caution:
The Risk of Dissonance

Not all emotions can be blended.

  • Compatible:
Joy + Interest (they strengthen each other).
  • Conflicting:
Fear + Relaxation (they cancel each other out).

If you try to create a "chord" and feel tension, dizziness, or a kind of grating sensation inside — you're trying to combine opposites. Stop and come back to a single, clean note.

Coming Up Next:
How to manage your mood through the body?

We've explored "chords" at the level of emotions. But as we know, every emotion has its own "echo" in the body. In the next Step, we'll move on to the most advanced body-based practice — finding and amplifying pleasant physical sensations that resonate with our higher states.
