Step 2

How to Enter Flow State:
Metacognition and the Minds Positive Loop

Why Flow State Feels Effortless:
Interoception, Observer Self, Energy

When water turns into steam, it doesn't just get hot. It takes on completely new, remarkable properties: lightness, the ability to expand, and the power to do enormous work.

The same is true of our consciousness. Shifting into a "Heightened Energy State" (Flow) is not simply "being in a really good mood." It is a fundamental change that brings with it entirely new phenomena in your perception — things you have never experienced before.

Your body suddenly starts to "sing," sending out spontaneous waves of pleasure. Your familiar sense of "self" begins to split in two, allowing you to act and watch yourself from the outside at the same time. Where do these "wonders" come from, and what do they mean? In this Step we will explore the three most striking phenomena of life "in the flow state."

Key Topics of the Lesson:

  • Interoceptive sensitivity:
Why the brain starts receiving pleasure signals from the body.
  • Metacognition:
The science behind the "split" into Observer and Doer.
  • Positive feedback loop:
How to start the "perpetual motion machine" of the mind.
  • Practice:
The "Finding Seeds" technique for uncovering peak experiences from your past.

What we called "Double Perception" is known in cognitive science as Metacognition (thinking about thinking).

  • It is the ability of the prefrontal cortex to monitor the activity of other parts of the brain in real time.

When you are simultaneously acting (Flow) and observing (Awareness), you create a Positive Feedback Loop. The pleasure of the action strengthens the action itself, producing an exponential rise in energy.

Three phenomena of life at higher energy levels

When your system shifts into a high-energy mode, new patterns begin to emerge within it. Here are the three most important ones.

1. The body starts to "sing" (Spontaneous pleasure)

What happens:

Your pleasant physical sensations begin to arise far more often, more intensely, and without any obvious outside cause.

What it feels like:

You might simply be sitting and working, and suddenly feel a warm wave of pleasure pass through your body. Entirely new kinds of sensation can appear too — for example, a "deep, upward pleasure": a rich, flowing sense of bliss that seems to fill all the space from the centre of your torso up to the top of your head.

Why this happens:

Your body, freed from the "residue" of chronic negativity and tension, reclaims its natural sensitivity. It stops being a "source of problems" and becomes a source of constant background joy.

Expert Insight:

"In peak experiences, a person is simultaneously at the height of their powers and yet feels like a detached observer, watching what is happening with a sense of awe."

Abraham Maslow, psychologist and founder of humanistic psychology.

2. "Double Self-Perception" appears

What happens:

Your sense of "self" becomes twofold. You stop identifying yourself entirely with what you are doing.

What it feels like:

You are simultaneously the "Acting Self" (fully immersed in the task, in the flow) and the "Experiencing Self" (a calm, detached observer who quietly enjoys the positive feelings in the background).

Why this happens:

This is the highest form of the "Art of Double Attention" we spoke about earlier. At high energy levels, this skill becomes so natural that it turns into your permanent way of being. You no longer "switch" between doing and observing. You do both at the same time. This brings an extraordinary sense of freedom and control.

3. The "perpetual motion machine" starts up

What happens:

Having this "double perception" creates a powerful positive feedback loop.

What it feels like:

Your "Acting Self" solves problems effectively and fulfils joyful desires, which generates a sense of richness and fullness in life. At the same time, your "Experiencing Self" creates a positive, joyful backdrop and a feeling of pleasure, which generates energy.

The result:

Richness and energy begin to reinforce each other simultaneously. Your growth becomes exponential.

Practical Assignment:
"Finding Seeds"

The goal of this practice

Not to "summon" these advanced states, but simply to find their "seeds" in your own past — their faint, fleeting traces.

1. Look for a physical echo

Right now, recall a moment when you felt very deep joy or love. Did your body try to respond to that feeling in some way? Were there fleeting sensations of warmth, goosebumps, or a sense of expansion in your chest? Those are the "seeds" of spontaneous physical pleasure.

2. Look for "double perception"

Think of a time when you were completely absorbed in something you found deeply engaging — a creative project, a sport, a game. Was there a moment in that state when you seemed to be watching yourself from the outside, with pleasure and delight — thinking: "Wow, look at how well I'm doing this!"? That is the "seed" of double self-perception.

3. Simply recognise it

Recognise that these "magical" states are not something completely foreign to you. Their seeds are already present in your experience. Your ongoing practice will simply help them grow and blossom.

A Question for Reflection:

Which of these three experiences — spontaneous physical pleasure, a constant sense of "double" self-awareness, or exponential growth in energy — motivates and inspires you the most?

⚙︎ Technical Diagnostics:
Metacognitive Feedback Loop Architecture

Under baseline operating conditions, the brain applies heavy interoceptive filtering — attenuating body-state signals to reduce processing overhead. In Flow state, this filter is partially bypassed. The insular cortex, which functions as the primary body-signal relay station, receives elevated throughput from visceral and somatic sensors, producing spontaneous waves of physical pleasure that would ordinarily be suppressed below conscious threshold.

This is not a malfunction. It is the system running at higher signal-to-noise ratio. The 'singing' sensation in the body corresponds to a measurable increase in afferent interoceptive bandwidth — more data from the body's internal sensors reaching the cortical processing layer. Warm sensations, goosebumps, and chest expansion are the phenomenological readout of this upregulated channel.

🛡 A word of caution:
Observer vs. Robot

Double Perception is a sign of mastery, but it is easy to confuse with Depersonalisation (a protective defence mechanism of the mind).

  • Healthy Metacognition:
The world feels vivid, you feel connected to your body, and your emotions are positive.
  • Depersonalisation:
The world feels "plastic" or flat, your body feels unfamiliar, and emotions are dulled (numbed).

If you feel a pane of glass between yourself and the world — that is not enlightenment, it is overwhelm. Ground yourself immediately.

Coming Up Next:
Why does personal growth sometimes feel like things are getting worse?

Living at a higher energy level is not just a feeling of joy. It brings new challenges with it. In the next Step we will explore the "Paradox of Growth" and talk about why, as your energy increases, the rare flashes of negativity you do experience can become much more intense — and what to do about it.
