Why Long-Term Potentiation Makes Your Goals Clearer Over Time

Imagine a saturated saltwater solution. Millions of tiny, invisible salt particles are drifting through it at random. Then you lower a small thread into it — a "seed." And something remarkable happens. The particles instantly begin to gather around that thread and bond together, forming a beautiful, intricate, and above all — solid crystal. Chaos turns into structure.

Our inner (spiritual) world works in exactly the same way at high energy levels. It is filled with "particles" — your positive (joyful) states, clear thoughts, and happy desires. But often they float in a kind of "solution," moving in all directions at once.

Yet at a certain point in your practice, a "crystal" begins to form within that "solution." One aspiration — the most important one to you — suddenly takes on extraordinary solidity, clarity, and stability. It stops being just a "wish." It becomes your "Strong Joyful Preference" — your primary inner Compass, the very axis of your personality.

Long-Term Potentiation (LTP) is the brain's primary mechanism for converting a transient electrical event into a permanent structural change. When two or more neurons fire in close temporal proximity — repeatedly and with sufficient intensity — the synaptic junction between them undergoes physical remodelling: receptor density increases, dendritic spines widen, and the connection's conductance improves measurably. This is Hebb's Rule operationalised at the hardware level.

The engineering analogy: think of a dirt path across a field. Each deliberate traversal compresses the soil slightly. After enough repeated passes, the path becomes a paved road — low-resistance, high-throughput. The brain does this with axonal myelination, wrapping signal-carrying fibres in a fatty insulating sheath that increases conduction velocity by up to 100x and eliminates signal bleed between adjacent channels.

A Strong Joyful Preference (the Compass) should give you direction — but it should never take away your flexibility.

  • The risk:
    Turning your "Compass" into a dogma or a fixed idea ("I can only see one goal — everything else is an obstacle").
  • A healthy structure:
    The crystal is solid, but it is alive. You can adjust your course and navigate around obstacles.

Don't confuse "Confidence" with "Stubbornness." A true Compass always leaves room for new information.
