How to Develop Interoception:
Make Feelings More Real and Grounded

Imagine water. In its ordinary state it is "liquid" — it changes shape easily, flows, and can be splashed around. But under the right conditions it can become "dense" — turning into ice. Or it can become "multi-dimensional" — transforming into a complex, three-dimensional snowflake.

The same is true of our positive and joyful states. In the early stages they are "liquid" — they arise easily and fade just as easily, and they tend to be fairly surface-level.

But when you begin to cultivate powerful "blended" states (which we talked about in the previous Step), the quality of your experiences can change dramatically. They gain "Density", becoming almost physically tangible. And they gain "Multi-dimensionality", opening up entirely new, previously unreachable "spaces" and states of consciousness within you.

    The brain's ability to read and amplify signals from inside the body (the sense of "Density").

The "Density" Phenomenon (The Insula):
The sense of an emotion feeling "real" and "solid" is handled by the Insular Cortex (Insula). It gathers signals from your internal organs. When a positive signal becomes very strong (as its amplitude grows), the Insula begins to interpret it as a physical sensation — pressure, warmth, or vibration. The emotion takes on "mass".

The "Multi-dimensionality" Phenomenon (TPJ):
The sense of "I am here, in this body" is managed by the Temporoparietal Junction (TPJ). During deep meditative states, TPJ activity decreases, the boundaries of the body schema blur, and what researchers call the "Oceanic Feeling" arises — a sense of expanding space.

⚙︎ Technical Diagnostics:
Interoceptive Gain & Boundary Dissolution

The insular cortex (insula) functions as the system's primary interoceptive signal processor — continuously polling visceral sensors (heart, lungs, gut) and converting raw afferent data into conscious 'body-state readouts.' Under baseline conditions, low-amplitude signals from internal organs remain below the threshold of conscious perception, filtered out as background noise.

When emotional intensity increases sufficiently — particularly through sustained 'blended state' cultivation — the insula's gain calibration shifts upward. Signals that previously registered as sub-threshold now cross into conscious bandwidth, manifesting as perceived pressure, warmth, or vibratory density. This is not metaphor: interoceptive neurons in the posterior insula exhibit measurable increased firing rates during high-valence emotional states, producing the sensation engineers might call 'signal saturation' — the emotion acquires apparent physical mass.

This mechanism is closely related to predictive coding: the brain's interoceptive model updates its priors, and what was once predicted as 'neutral' body space is re-mapped as a high-information, high-salience zone. The emotion stops being abstract and becomes a three-dimensional internal event.

🛡 Safety First:
Grounding

Playing with "Multi-dimensionality" and expanded awareness can cause mild disorientation (dizziness, a feeling that the floor has disappeared beneath you).

  • If you feel "swept away":
    Don't try to stand up or move around quickly.
  • What to do:
    Come back to the sense of your boundaries. Touch your knees, squeeze your fists, feel the firmness of the chair beneath you. Tell yourself: "I have a shape, I am here."

Density (on the inside) is a good thing. Loss of boundaries (on the outside) calls for caution — avoid driving or operating machinery.
