How to Find Hidden Programs in Your Mind:
Core Beliefs

The Reverse Engineering Method and Implicit Memory

Imagine your smartphone. There are the visible apps that you installed yourself. But then there are the system processes running in the background that you don't even know exist. Yet, these are the very programs that control the screen, the connection, and the battery. If there is a "bug" in one of them, the whole phone starts to glitch, and you can’t figure out why.

Our dogmas work exactly the same way. There are explicit dogmas—beliefs we can easily voice and are ready to defend in an argument. For example: "I believe a university degree is mandatory for success."

But then there are the hidden dogmas, or the "firmware." These are much deeper, unspoken rules that we don't even recognize as beliefs. They just seem like "common sense" or "the way the world works." It is these invisible programs that are responsible for our most confusing and unexplained reactions.

Key Topics of the Lesson:

  • Implicit Memory:
The storage unit for beliefs we aren't consciously aware of.
  • Core Beliefs:
What they are and how they differ from simple opinions.
  • Reverse Engineering:
A practical method for bringing subconscious programs into the light of your conscious mind.

What is the difference between "hidden firmware" and an explicit dogma?

An explicit dogma is something you can put into words and explain to others.

"Hidden firmware" is what you believe without even knowing you believe it. It is an unconscious certainty that shows up not in your speech, but in your automatic reactions and deep-seated feelings.

Example:

A person is asked:
"Do you believe it is impossible to stop feeling negative emotions?"

They might sincerely reply:
"I’ve never really thought about it."

On the surface, they have no explicit dogma on the subject.

However, the moment they encounter anger, they don't even attempt to neutralize it. They simply suffer, treating the pain as something absolutely natural and inevitable. They act with total certainty that nothing can be changed. This unspoken certainty—this "default" setting—is their hidden firmware.

Neuroscience identifies two primary types of memory that govern your behavior:

1. Explicit (Declarative) Memory:
"I know the Earth is round." these are facts stored in the hippocampus. You can recall them, talk about them, and analyze them consciously.

2. Implicit (Procedural) Memory:
"I know how to ride a bike." These are skills and automatic processes stored in the basal ganglia and cerebellum.

Hidden beliefs are not just abstract thoughts; they are response skills. They are written into your procedural memory. This is why you cannot simply "change your mind" through sheer willpower. The brain executes them like automatic code, bypassing your conscious awareness entirely.

Expert Insight:

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”

Carl Jung, psychiatrist, founder of analytical psychology, and pioneer in the study of the unconscious mind.

How "Hidden Firmware" Poisons Your Life

These are the most dangerous "mental viruses" because you cannot fight an enemy that remains invisible to your conscious mind.

1. They generate unexplained systemic problems.

You repeatedly find yourself in the same unpleasant situations—for example, in relationships where you aren't valued—and you cannot understand why. The root cause is often hidden firmware that says: "I don't deserve to be treated well."

2. They trigger command overrides and blocks.

You see a clear solution to your problem (for example, "I need to quit this toxic job"), but you feel an inexplicable terror and mental freeze at the very thought of it. This is your hidden firmware running a survival script: "Independence is a mortal threat."

3. They create internal "blind spots."

You don't understand why you acted the way you did. Your behaviors feel "instinctive" simply because you cannot see the background program that is actually dictating your every move.

How to Drag Your "Firmware" into the Light:
The Reverse Engineering Method

Since hidden firmware is invisible to your direct thoughts, you must locate it through its output—your automatic, instinctive reactions and recurring life patterns.

1. Locate the "System Glitch"

Identify a repetitive, illogical reaction or problem in your behavior. (Example: "I am terrified of asking for help, even when it is absolutely necessary").

2. Apply the "As If" Logic Query

Ask yourself: "I am acting as if I am 100% certain of what? What unwritten rule is forcing me to behave this way?"

3. Define the Firmware Protocol

Attempt to put this unwritten rule into a single, clear sentence.
Example: "I am avoiding help as if I am totally certain that asking for assistance is humiliating and dangerous."

There it is—your hidden firmware.

The moment you give it a name, it is no longer hidden. You have successfully moved it from the "System Files" folder to your "Desktop." Now that the code is visible, you can begin to work with it just like any other explicit dogma.

Practical Assignment:
Your First "Unpacking"

The Goal of this Practice:

To apply the reverse engineering method to one of your unexplained reactions for the first time. By doing this, you transition from being a victim of a "glitch" to being an analyst of your own mind.

1. Identify a "System Error"

Think about your behavior right now. Which recurring reaction or fear feels the most illogical and obstructive to you?

Examples: "I always apologize even when I’m not guilty," "I find it hard to accept compliments," "I procrastinate on important calls until the very last minute."

2. Apply the Formula

Take that specific reaction and plug it into this simple formula:

"I [do this], as if I am 100% certain that [THE RULE]."

3. Define the Rule

Write down the underlying belief that emerges from the formula.

For example:

"I always apologize, as if I am 100% certain that any disagreement is a dangerous conflict that must be avoided at all costs."

"I struggle to accept compliments, as if I am 100% certain that I don’t deserve praise and will soon be exposed as a fraud."

A Question for Reflection

Now that you have dragged this "hidden firmware" into the light, do you recognize it? Can you see where it might have come from—perhaps a specific childhood experience or a recurring message from your parents?

⚙︎ Technical Diagnostics:
Subconscious Logic & Implicit Memory Audit

From a systems engineering perspective, the mind uses two distinct storage partitions. Declarative Memory is your system's "Desktop"—it contains the facts and ideas you can consciously access and move.

Implicit Memory functions as the "Firmware"—it contains the hard-coded response protocols and motor skills (like riding a bike).

Because core beliefs are stored in the Implicit Partition (Basal Ganglia), they operate as background processes that cannot be accessed by a simple "Search" command in your conscious mind.

🛡 Safety Protocol:
Disidentification

When you uncover a hidden belief (for example: "I am certain that I don't deserve love"), it can feel painful.

Remember: This is not the truth about you. It is simply outdated code.

Finding a virus on a computer doesn't make the computer "bad." Your only task is to locate the "malicious file," not to believe its content. Approach your findings as a researcher, not a victim.

Coming Up Next:
How to Distinguish Facts from Assumptions?

We have successfully diagnosed the problem. We’ve seen how both explicit and hidden dogmas manage our lives. Now, it is time to shift toward the "cure." In the next Step, we will explore exactly how our blind beliefs (dogmas) distort our perception of reality.
