How to Find Mental Viruses:
Cognitive Biases and Dogmas

A vintage engraving of a human head filled with mischievous gremlins, serving as a metaphor for cognitive biases, irrational dogmas, and mental viruses in the brain.

Why the Truth Makes Us Angry:
The Backfire Effect

Imagine your computer has caught a virus. It operates quietly in the background, out of sight. Yet, it forces the system to execute strange commands: opening unwanted websites, sending out spam, and causing the whole machine to lag or "glitch." You try to get work done, but this invisible program constantly sabotages your efforts.

Our minds can be infected by similar "viruses." We call these dogmas. These are unverified ideas from others that we "downloaded" at some point and accepted as absolute truth. They run on autopilot, distorting our perception of reality and dictating irrational behavior. Most importantly, they trick us into defending them as if they were our own original convictions.

The majority of people live with dozens of these mental viruses without ever realizing they are there. In this Step, we will learn how to perform an "antivirus diagnostic" to detect the first signs of these parasitic programs within your thinking.

Key Topics of the Lesson:

  • The Nature of Dogmatism:
Distinguishing between a healthy, evidence-based belief and a rigid cognitive bias.
  • The Backfire Effect:
The psychological reason why facts often fail to change our minds and instead trigger hostility.
  • Practical Application:
An "Antivirus Diagnostic" protocol to help you uncover and identify irrational mental program

What is a Dogma, and How Does It Differ from a Healthy Belief?

A dogma is any belief that possesses two distinct characteristics:

  1. It is accepted on faith, without any critical analysis or factual verification.
  2. It is aggressively defended against any attempt to challenge it.

Let’s look at the comparison.

A Healthy Belief
(A Verified Conclusion)

How it’s formed:

You’ve analyzed the information, weighed the facts, gained personal experience, and arrived at your own independent conclusion.

Example: "I believe regular exercise is vital for health because I’ve read the studies and I personally feel more energized when I move."

How it responds to criticism:

With curiosity. "That’s an interesting perspective. What are your arguments? Perhaps there is something I haven't considered yet." A healthy belief is always open to updates.

A Dogma
(A "Mental Virus" or Blind Belief)

How it’s formed:

You heard it somewhere (from parents, on social media, or on TV) or you feel like you’ve "always known" it to be true.

Example: "You must eat breakfast every single morning, otherwise you’ll ruin your stomach!"

How it responds to criticism:

With aggression. "That’s nonsense! Everyone knows that’s true! Are you stupid?" A dogma is closed-off and hostile toward any new data.

The primary sign of a "mental virus" is not the content of the thought itself, but your emotional reaction when someone tries to challenge it. If you feel irritation and anger instead of curiosity, you’ve likely stumbled upon a dogma.

In the field of psychology, the aggressive reaction you feel when your dogma is criticized is called the Backfire Effect.

MRI research reveals that when someone attacks a deeply held belief, your Amygdala—the brain's emotional "alarm center"—is activated. This is the exact same region that responds to physical threats.

The Mechanism:
Your biological hardware sees no difference between a "charging predator" and "someone telling you you're wrong." The brain treats disagreement as a threat to its survival, which is why it triggers anger and shuts down the logical processing centers of the Prefrontal Cortex.

Expert Insight:

“A man with a conviction is a hard man to change. Tell him you disagree and he turns away. Show him facts or figures and he questions your sources. Appeal to logic and he fails to see your point.”

Leon Festinger, renowned psychologist and author of the theory of cognitive dissonance.

How Do "Viruses" Control Your Life?

1. They create "blind spots."

A dogma (blind belief) prevents you from seeing facts that contradict it. You begin to live in a distorted reality constructed by the rules of the "virus" rather than objective evidence.

2. They trigger irrational actions.

You continue to do (or avoid) certain things not because they are beneficial, but simply because "it is how things are done" according to the dogma’s script.

3. They drain your energy.

You waste massive amounts of mental fuel defending your dogmas in arguments and battling internal guilt whenever you violate their instructions.

Practical Assignment:
The "Virus" Test

The Goal of this Practice:

To notice your own dogmatic reaction for the first time. You are learning to track the exact moment when the "Virus Defense System" overrides your conscious "Pilot."

1. Identify a Recent Event

Right now, recall a recent argument or debate (even an online one) where someone challenged your opinion.

2. Recall Your Reaction

Replay your initial, automatic response. What did you feel in that moment?

  • Option A (The "Pilot" Response):
A sense of curiosity, interest in the other person’s logic, and a desire to understand their point of view.
  • Option B (The "Virus" Response):
A sudden flash of irritation, anger, an urge to interrupt, the thought "this is total nonsense," or making personal remarks about the other person.

3. Be Honest with Yourself

If your reaction was closer to Option B, congratulations! You’ve just uncovered the signature of a mental dogma. You’ve seen the "virus" active in your own system.

A Question for Reflection

Which dogma was likely driving that defensive reaction? What "sacred rule" about the world or yourself were you protecting so aggressively?

⚙︎ Technical Diagnostics:
Malware Signatures and Defensive Subroutines

From a systems perspective, a dogma is a borrowed script that bypassed the initial "Security Sandbox" (critical analysis).

Unlike a verified belief—which is an open-source file ready for updates—a dogma functions as a compiled, read-only file.

It is hard-coded into the system, making it resistant to new data packets and causing the system to ignore any incoming "error signals" that contradict the script.

🛡 Safety Protocol:
Quarantine

Do not attempt to "cure" those around you.

Once you understand the mechanics of dogmas, you will be tempted to point out the "mental viruses" in others. Resist this urge.

Attacking someone else's dogma will only trigger their Backfire Effect (anger). Focus exclusively on your own consciousness. Leave others to their own journey unless they specifically ask for your assistance.

Coming Up Next:
Why Do Childhood Beliefs Rule Our Lives?

We now understand what dogmas are. But where does their incredible power come from, especially the ones we absorbed as children? In the next Step, we will explore the Imprinting Effect and discover why our earliest convictions become hard-coded into our minds almost permanently.
