How to Create an Upward Spiral of Joy:

Why Does Joy Attract More Joy? The Upward Spiral and Affective Priming

Imagine two guitar strings tuned to the same note. If you pluck one string, what happens to the other — even though you never touched it? It starts to quietly vibrate and ring on its own. This is called resonance. The vibrations of one string pass to the other.

Just like guitar strings, all of our positive (joyful) states are "tuned" to the same wavelength. They are in harmony with one another. And this leads to a wonderful, almost magical effect.

When you "pluck the string" of one joyful state — say, you feel gratitude — other "strings" (tenderness, calm, a sense of beauty) begin to vibrate and ring on their own, without any effort from you. In this Step we'll explore how this "Law of Resonance" works and how to use it to create whole symphonies of joy within yourself.

Key Topics of the Lesson:

  • The Upward Spiral:
The theory of how one emotion triggers a cascade of others.
  • Affective Priming:
Why the brain finds it easier to notice good things when it's already been "warmed up" by positivity.
  • Coherence:
The synchronisation of different areas of the brain working together.
  • Practice:
The "Chain Reaction" technique for effortlessly entering a resourceful state.

Why does joy attract more joy?

  • Your memory works like a network (Associative Network). Concepts like "tenderness", "warmth", and "a smile" are stored in neighbouring clusters of neurons.
  • When you activate the node "Tenderness", an electrical signal automatically spreads to nearby nodes (Spreading Activation).

This isn't magic — it's Affective Priming: it is physically easier for the brain to activate the nearby neural network of "Gratitude" than the distant network of "Anger".

Expert Insight:

"Positive emotions don't simply follow one another. They create an Upward Spiral that transforms not only your mood but your biology, building your resilience to stress."

Barbara Fredrickson, Professor of Psychology, emotions researcher, and originator of the Upward Spiral theory.

🔒 Move from Theory to Consciousness Tuning

You've studied the laws of emotional "physics." But knowing the formula doesn't mean knowing how to use it. The closed section of this lesson contains tools for fine-tuning your state of mind.

What awaits you here:

  • Activation Algorithm: A precise guide on how to trigger the state you want (joy, flow) on demand.
  • Laws of Inertia & Resonance: How to use the brain's "physics" to make changes permanent.
  • Protection Against Setbacks: How to overcome Psychological Homeostasis (resistance to change).

This lesson is part of the "Course 6: The Science of Happiness" system. Move from observing to mastering your inner world.

⚙︎ Technical Diagnostics:
Affective Cascade Propagation Dynamics

The brain stores emotional states as interconnected nodes within an associative semantic network — a distributed architecture where each node (e.g., 'tenderness', 'gratitude', 'calm') is physically encoded as a cluster of co-activated neurons. These nodes are not isolated: they are linked by weighted synaptic pathways strengthened through co-occurrence learning (Hebbian plasticity: 'neurons that fire together, wire together').

When a single node is deliberately activated — via memory recall, somatic anchoring, or focused attention — an electrical excitation signal propagates outward along these pathways in a process called spreading activation. Adjacent nodes whose activation threshold is exceeded begin firing autonomously, without direct volitional input. This is not metaphor — it is measurable via fMRI as a cascade of BOLD signal increases across limbic and prefrontal regions.

Engineering analogy: the associative network functions as a mesh bus topology. Injecting a signal at one node propagates voltage across all connected branches proportional to synaptic weight (connection strength). Nodes with higher coupling coefficients — built through repeated co-activation — respond first and most strongly.

🛡 Safety Note:
Resonance vs. Suppression

The Law of Resonance works when you are in a neutral or mildly low state.

  • If you are experiencing intense grief or anger, don't try to "smother" it with positivity — this creates a conflict between systems and can backfire.

The rule:
First, work through or contain the strong negative feeling (using Level 1 techniques), return to neutral, and only then activate positive resonance. Don't hang wallpaper in a burning house.

Coming Up Next:
How to Make Joy Last?

We've seen how joyful states interact with one another. But what are they actually made of? In the next Step we'll begin the "Anatomy of Joy" and explore four fundamental "dimensions", or qualities, that every positive experience contains.
