Understanding Unity:
The Default Mode Network and the "Oceanic Feeling"

We spend our entire lives in a world of sharp, defined boundaries. This is a table; that is a chair. There is the sound of my voice, and there is the noise from the street. My joy is separate from my sadness. Our fundamental skill of Discernment—the very thing we have been mastering throughout this course—constantly carves the world into separate objects. This is an essential tool that helps us survive and take action.

But are there moments when these rigid boundaries momentarily melt away? Moments where the hum of the city, the warmth of the cup in your hands, and your own internal stillness suddenly cease to be separate things and merge into one unified, harmonious experience?

Such moments are not fantasies. They represent a real and profound state of consciousness we call "Merging." Most often, we stumble upon this state during transitional periods—like those fleeting seconds just before falling asleep. As your mastery grows, you can learn to notice, capture, and even extend these extraordinary moments of internal clarity.

Ego-Boundary Dissolution & System Reset

In the architecture of the mind, the "Self" or "Ego" is a high-level background process maintained by the Default Mode Network (DMN). During standard wakefulness, this network acts as a Data Tagging system, labeling every perception as "Mine" or "Other."

The practice of Merging involves manually lowering the DMN's activity. When this tagging process stops, the brain processes reality in its raw state, resulting in the experience of Ego Dissolution.

🛡 Safety Protocol:
The Fear of Dissolving

In the threshold state, as your ego boundaries begin to dissolve, you might experience a sudden spike of fear (“I am disappearing!”, “I’m falling!”).

  • This is a natural reaction from the amygdala to what it perceives as a loss of control.

What to do:
Do not fight it. Simply tell yourself: “This is a safe process of falling asleep; the brain is just switching modes.” If the fear feels overwhelming, simply wiggle your finger—this physical movement will instantly ground you back in your body and return you to normal waking consciousness.
